HOW TO SURVIVE IN BEIJING

      You need to survive!

Chinese people are famous for its cuisine and food culture,  They are told to eat all 4-legged things except tables.  When you walk on the streets, you find tens of food vendors from noodles to ice cream, which makes you hungry and fat.  If you do not want to get fat, you should not visit Beijing!!  But some people are afraid of hygiene of those vendors and actually suffer from food poisoning very often.  But when you live in Beijing for a while, you will be OK.  But once you go out for shopping for foods, you see many unfamiliar food materials which might give you a creep for the first time.
When I was much younger and visited Korea, I screamed and ran away from the market when I saw a skinned big head.  But nowadays, I enjoy taking pictures of those interesting materials.  But do not ask me to touch or cook them....

     Beijing duck

      Heaven and hell

The most famous restaurant for Beijing duck is called "Quanjude ".  The taste and the price of Beijing duck are quite different from those of Japan.  You can enjoy a whole duck around US$15 (JP\2,000).  When I was enjoying various dishes besides the roasted Beijing duck, I found a cup of abalone soup very delicious.  The soup was clear with slices of abalone and curled materials which I did not figure out.  When I asked what they were, the person next to me kindly informed me they were duck' s tongues!  I was surprised but the soup was so delicious that I did not mind the fact very much.  Tasting various dishes, I found one particular dish which was not touched. I asked people with a charming smile "Are they crabs?" Because they looked just like small crabs placed upside down.  My best friend turned one of the "crab" but I still did not understand what that meant.  He said "It is a duck's head cut into half."     ......silence........
You must be very careful about things you eat even at a famous restaurant while you were in China.  Good luck!

    Traffic

China is a huge nation.  Consequently streets are very wide....of course.  Main streets in Beijing have approximately 10 lanes which you have to cross everyday. You will not believe me, but there are no signals and crossings for pedestrians!!!!   People in Beijing need nothing but motor nerves.  Even a person with a motor requires a few days to get used to cross a street.
Naturally, traffic accidents in Beijing are tragic.   During the traffic safety campaign, you see many pictures of traffic accidents as shown below at the corner of streets.  Photos of victims are not masked and they are all explicit.  If  you do not like bloody scenes, please refrain from approaching those posters.

  Watch out for traffic accidents!
